1. IS IT LEGAL? Can you shoot coyotes in Florida?
Coyote encounters have increased in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, with hundreds of encounters reported in the last few years. Coyotes are in every county in the state and they can be dangerous.
Coyotes are an important part of the landscape in Florida, the FWC said, helping to maintain rodent and insect populations. However, they “can and do prey on” cats, dogs, chickens and rabbits.
Does Florida law let you shoot them yourself? Yes. Coyotes are classified as furbearers, not game, and may be hunted year-round on private property with the landowner’s permission, the FWC said.
Legal weapons are rifles, shotguns, pistols, muzzleloaders, air guns, crossbow or bow. However, there may be local laws about where you can discharge a firearm. Check local ordinances or call the local police department or the sheriff’s office to make sure before you shoot.
Can you trap coyotes in Florida? Yes. Trapping is allowed on private property, although you’ll need an FWC permit to use steel traps. The agency also maintains a list of trappers, or you can call USDA Wildlife Services at 866-487-3297. – C.A. Bridges/USA TODAY Network-Florida
2. CCSO: Human remains found in East Naples
In less than a year, Collier County authorities have probed two sets of human remains found about 10 miles apart.
Michelle Batten, Collier County sheriff’s spokesperson, said deputies continue to investigate human remains found May 21 at Sugden Regional Park, in the 4200 block of Avalon Drive, in East Naples.
The 60-acre waterfront park is near U.S. 41 and Rattlesnake Road.
Dispatchers received a 911 call just after 2 p.m., and since then, the park has remained closed while authorities continue their investigation. Sheriff’s cruisers are blocking all park access points.
It is not the first instance human remains are discovered in Southwest Florida this week.
On May 18, Fort Myers Police said they found the remains of 78-year-old Porter Albert, last seen Jan. 15, 2020.
Also in Collier County, less than a year ago, sheriff’s detectives tested bones found in a construction site along Daniels Road, in Naples.
