49ers sign 2 RBs after oft-injured RB gets hurt again

The San Francisco 49ers received some bad news this week, as running back Isaac Guerendo suffered a torn pectoral while lifting weights, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Guerendo has rushed for 420 yards and four touchdowns on 5.0 yards per carry in 30 games in his career. This injury will likely knock him out for the remainder of the offseason and could put his 2026 campaign in jeopardy.

Following the injury, the team has signed two running backs – Jordan Mims and Jermar Jefferson.

Mims, 26, played at Fresno State from 2017-22 and signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He had a two-year stint with the New Orleans Saints and spent the 2025 season with the Tennessee Titans. He’s rushed for just 70 yards on 3.5 yards per attempt and caught 12 passes for an additional 71 yards.

Jefferson, 26, played at Oregon State from 2018-20, earning All-Pac-12 honors once before the Detroit Lions took him in the seventh round (No. 257 overall) in the 2021 NFL draft. After four years in Detroit, he split the 2025 season between the Titans and Arizona Cardinals. In 11 games, he’s rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns on 4.6 yards per attempt, while catching five passes for 33 yards.

San Francisco also waived running back Sincere McCormick and placed Darrick Forrest on injured reserve. Both players spent time on the team’s practice squad last year before signing deals with the 49ers this offseason. If Forrest remains on injured reserve, he won’t play at all in 2026.
