49ers waive free agent signing before training camp even starts

The San Francisco 49ers are about to be back in their SAP Performance Facility for the start of training camp, with rookies reporting on Saturday, July 18, and veterans coming back on Saturday, July 25.

Before that, the 49ers decided to move on from one player, as they announced that they had waived offensive lineman Zachary Thomas on Friday.

Thomas, 28, joined San Francisco’s roster earlier this offseason on a reserve/futures deal before free agency officially began in March. Prior to his time with the 49ers, he had stints with the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts.

Heading into camp, Thomas likely would’ve faced an uphill battle to make the roster as a depth tackle. This move leaves the 49ers with an open spot on the roster and Trent Williams, Colton McKivitz, Austen Pleasants, Vederian Lowe, Enrique Cruz Jr., Brandon Parker and Isaac Alarcon at offensive tackle.
