The San Francisco 49ers made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday, signing veteran defensive back Ashtyn Davis and releasing Jermar Jefferson to create the roster spot.
Davis, 29, played collegiately at California from 2015-19, earning All-Pac-12 honors twice, before the New York Jets took him in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft. In five years with the Jets and one with the Miami Dolphins, he’s appeared in 84 games and recorded 240 tackles, 19 passes defensed, nine interceptions, four forced fumbles and four fumbles recovered.
Jefferson, 26, played at Oregon State from 2018-20, earning All-Pac-12 honors once, before the Detroit Lions selected him in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft. Over five years with the Detroit Lions and one with the Arizona Cardinals, he rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns while catching five passes for 33 yards. He signed with San Francisco last week.
The 49ers needed help in the defensive back room with Malik Mustapha, Ji’Ayir Brown and Marques Sigle expected to be the top three at safety. Davis has experience and could easily take over as a starter or play as the third safety in the group.
