The girls tennis season is now underway throughout the state.
Here are five Metro Detroit area schools to watch this season.
Detroit Country Day
Winners of seven of the last nine Division 3 state championships, Detroit Country Day is looking for a three-peat in 2026.
The sophomore trio of Chloe Conniff, Karishma Vakhariya and Addie Grebinski hold down the top three singles spots this year. Vakhariya was the state champ at No. 3 singles in 2025. Kyra Zacharias fills out the singles lineup at the No. 4 spot.
Senior Helen Benjamin, the No. 4 singles state champion in 2025, is pairing up with junior Quinn Norlander at No. 1 doubles. Norlander played No. 1 doubles last year as well. Sophomore Grace Kalkanis is at two doubles after winning states at No. 4 doubles last season, teaming up with Zoe Bergg.
Senior Noor Mahmoud and junior Margaux Mohn are back and playing together at No. 3 doubles, with Jiya Gill and Zoe Grebinski rounding out a loaded lineup at No. 4 doubles.
Northville
In Division 1, the team to beat might be the team that hoisted the trophy to end last year. Northville is the defending champion in the state’s top class, and is ranked No. 1 in the early going this season.
With nine of the 12 members of the state finals lineup back in the fold, Northville is primed to take another major stab at the Division 1 title.
Seniors Talia Nishanian and Michelle Lee are back from the singles lineup while junior Emmi Dober is back from her No. 3 spot as well. Add in freshman Sophia Shipway at No. 1 singles and Northville has loads of top-end talent.
Grace Xu is a sophomore, who was seeded at No. 1 doubles a year ago, and junior Emma Murphy won the No. 4 doubles flight championship. Lucia Lachapelle and Aadya Pullalarevu are juniors who were partners at No. 2 doubles last season and the junior pair of Sravya Doppalapudi and Francine Ong teamed up at No. 3 doubles in 2025.
Northville, coached by Brenda Lionas, will be a force to be reckoned with all year long.
Utica Eisenhower
Perhaps the biggest contender to Northville is Eisenhower.
Ranked as the top team in the state entering the state finals in 2025, Eisenhower took home a second-place finish. The year before yielded a runner-up finish as well.
This year, Eisenhower has plans to take a back seat at No. 1. It helps when Gabriella Sadowski is at the top of the lineup. Sadowski has been the top seed at No. 1 singles the past two seasons, splitting state championship matches against Nicole Fu from Rochester Adams, who graduated last season.
Morgan Emerick won the No. 2 singles flight last season as a freshman, and Mia Miller is back for her junior season as well. Seniors Sofia Gardner and Alexis Gabriel come back from the doubles lineup, along with juniors Kara Lu, Olivia Martiniovski and Maria Khami. Lu and Gabriel form a solid No. 1 doubles tandem in 2026.
Eisenhower is a motivated bunch, and is certainly a team to keep an eye on this spring.
Birmingham Seaholm
The crew in Division 2 is lead by defending champion Seaholm. Head coach Casey Cullen has overseen Birmingham Seaholm win Division 2 state championships in 2023 and 2025, while also securing a runner-up spot in 2024.
Senior Jada Josifovski won the state championship at No. 2 singles last season and slides up to play No. 1 this year. Sophomore Devon Rusk and junior Milana Kest return from last year’s singles lineup as well to team up at No. 2. and No. 3, respectively. Sabrina Dunn is at No. 4.
Senior Lucy Jen played on the No. 1 doubles team last year and is there again, this year with junior Sophia Arndt. Arndt won the No. 2 doubles flight last year with Anna Olekszyk, who is now a senior playing No. 2 doubles with Katie Joyce.
Joyce, a junior, was a state champion at No. 4 doubles last year. Senior Kate Crowley and junior Cate French are running it back at No. 3 doubles after their state championship campaign at that same flight in 2025. Alina Vilaire and Jacqueline Supancich round out the squad at No. 4 doubles.
This deep bunch is loaded with experience, and will be a handful for anyone to deal with.
Ann Arbor Greenhills
In recent seasons, Division 4 has been dominated by Greenhills.
As Greenhills sets its sights on a fifth straight state championship this year, there is plenty of reason to believe that the train keeps rolling.
Juniors Nina Malani and Hazel Morgan great a formidable top two of the singles lineup. Malani and Morgan were state champions at No. 3 and No. 4 singles last season, and slide up to take the top two spots this year.
Two freshman, Faith Miller and Jahan Sofi come in to play No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Senior Danica Rakic-Dennis is at No. 1 doubles after winning the same flight last season, pairing up with senior Lauren Ye, who won states at No. 3 doubles.
Alyssa Hong and Jessica Lou are both juniors who are paired up at the No. 2 doubles flight.
Greenhills has great depth, and any route they choose to go in the bottom few flights should be a contender to win their respective flight. Longtime head coach Mark Randolph remains the overseer of the program. Remember Ann Arbor Greenhills come postseason time.
