Sturgis tennis team logs second straight victory on the courts

STURGIS — The Sturgis tennis team has pieced together a winning streak.

The Trojans have won each of their last two matches on the court. It will be a busy handful of days for the Trojans, who also will play on Tuesday, Wednesday and on Saturday. Sturgis improved to 6-3 on the season with the two wins.

On Monday afternoon, Sturgis won a Wolverine Conference matchup over Niles, 7-1.

The Trojans were able to sweep the singles matches on the day, winning all eight sets played.

Cora Phillips beat Cheyenne Small at first singles 6-4 and 6-2 while Gracie Perry won her match over Donna Babler at second singles, 6-1 and 6-2.

Mazie Sterling registered a win at third singles for the Trojans, beating Mia Abarca with scores of 6-2 and 6-3 while Bella Currier took care of business in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bella Castillo at fourth singles.

Katelyn Halling and Mya Eicher won at first doubles, 6-2 and 6-4 over Hailee Mitchell and Addison VanDalsen. Third doubles saw Ella Whitehead and Bailey Cates won over Aziynne Ingle and Aurora Custard by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Also picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win was the fourth doubles team of Lilly Whitehead and Stella Barry over Kennedy Holloway and Bella Ladesma.

Last week, Sturgis got the best of Edwardsburg by a team score of 7-1.

Sturgis won each of the seven matches which were played on the courts. The match at second singles was not played.

Phillips won over Bella Hankins at first singles 6-1, 6-2. Sterling won her match over Abby Ray at 6-0, 6-0 and Currier won over Hannah Shull at 6-1, 6-1.

Sturgis won in straight sets in each of the doubles matches.

Mya Eicher and Hallling won at 6-3, 6-1 in first doubles play over Greta Day and Nathalie Dufour. At second doubles, the team of Marlee Smith and Hannah Ritchie won over Jenna Peterson and Kendyll Wallace at 6-2 and 3-0.

Lilly Whitehead and Barry won at third doubles 7-5, 7-5 over Onna Letter and Reece Kaplon. Ella Whitehead and Cates picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth doubles over Braidy Hunsberger and Mikayla Shepherd.
