Kroger expands rewards program with new ways to save on groceries

Nationwide grocery giant Kroger is changing its fuel points program, allowing customers to use points earned on items besides gas.

On Thursday, June 25, the Cincinnati-based grocer with a Michigan division unveiled the changes to its long-time rewards program. Kroger said in a news release that its “fuel points” now simply will be known as “points.”

Instead of letting the points expire, or maybe you don’t use them to buy fuel, you can now use those points to get dollars off savings on groceries at checkout.

“We’re excited to help customers stretch their budgets and give more choices in how they use the rewards they earn shopping with us,” said Megan Shaffer, Kroger group vice president of customer growth and strategy, in a news release. “Whether they’re saving up to $35 on their next fill-up or taking dollars off their grocery bill, customers can now choose the savings that matter most to them.”

Kroger’s fuel points allowed shoppers to earn one point for every $1 spent using its rewards card in-store or online. Earnings start at 100 points, and customers can get 10 cents off a gallon of gas. The fuel points earned in a given month are valid the following month and expire at the end of that month. Kroger Boost members (there’s a fee to join) earn two times the points on purchases.

Kroger, at times, also has extra point specials when you buy select gift cards and other promotions.

Here’s how it works

To redeem points, customers need to activate them through Kroger.com or the Kroger app before checkout. When ordering online for pickup or delivery, customers can redeem points for dollars off groceries within their cart. Kroger’s rewards program is free to join. In Michigan, the Kroger Co. operates 120 stores.
