Detroit CC's Gideon Gash explains commitment to Texas Tech football

Gideon Gash felt at home the first time he took a recruiting visit to Texas Tech University.

That feeling never wavered for the Novi Detroit Catholic Central defensive back throughout the process, leading to Gash’s verbal commitment to the Red Raiders in June. Gash, a Division 1 All-State player who helped CC win the state title as a junior, is rated as the No. 2 player in Michigan’s 2027 football recruiting class, according to 247Sports.

A former CC teammate, offensive lineman Danilo Guberinich, is entering his second season with Texas Tech as a redshirt freshman. Gash received strong reviews from Guberinich, and the familiar face was another selling point for the 6-foot-4 defensive back.

“It feels like home,” Gash said on Wednesday, June 24, while representing CC at the Detroit High School Sports Award Show at MotorCity Casino. “I love my position coach [Darcel McBath]. He’s a really cool guy, and I learned a lot just from doing a one-hour film study with him.”

McBath, a former star cornerback at Texas Tech, and the rest of the coaching staff had a detailed plan on how to utilize and develop Gash over his collegiate career.

“They explained, articulated how they’re going to fit him in the defense and eventually move him around based on how much he grows in his frame and how much weight he puts on,” Catholic Central coach Justin Cessante said. “I think he just liked everything about it from the people, the culture, the facilities and the game plan for him.”

Gash chose the Red Raiders from a list of finalists that included Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama and Michigan State. Two of his older brothers, Caleb and Samson, are Spartans, but Gash opted to branch out on his own in west Texas.

“They wanted me to go to Michigan State but they were super supportive,” Gash said.

That relationship with the coaching staff was the main selling point. Gash said the financial offers from each athletic department were in the same ballpark, and he wanted to base his decision on the relationships he formed.

“Many people think I went there just for the money, and that’s not it,” Gash said. “Some people were in my ear saying, ‘You should commit there,’ because at first they did have the highest bid. I held my ground because that’s not really what I make my mark off of. A lot more goes into it.

“It just felt like home down there.”
