A 37-year-old man died after being shot by Simi Valley police officers on July 21.
Officers with the Simi Valley Police Department responded to the 2500 block of Dusan Street around 1:45 p.m. after multiple officers shot at a man involved in an earlier domestic violence incident, said Cmdr. Daniel Freitas.
The area is a residential neighborhood near Crestview Elementary School and Sycamore Park.
Police were originally called to the same neighborhood around 8:15 a.m. for an alleged domestic violence incident, but the suspect had already left, the commander said.
Officers encountered the man in a vehicle near the Simi Valley Town Center around 1:35 p.m. and attempted to stop him, but he failed to pull over, Freitas said.
The man, a Simi Valley resident, eventually drove back to the neighborhood where he was shot by multiple police officers, the commander said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were injured in the altercation. A police motorcycle was struck but was unoccupied at the time of the crash, said Officer Casey Nicholson.
The police department was investigating the shooting and taking statements from the six officers directly involved, Nicholson said. It is unclear how many officers fired their guns and struck the man.
Several police cars and police tape blocked off Dusan Street from public access between Talbert Avenue and Ashford Street as of 7 p.m.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office is participating in the investigation and the department will be launching a separate administrative investigation, a department news release said. All involved officers will be place on administrative leave, officers said.
The incident is the second shooting by Simi Valley police officers in less than a month.
On July 2, officers with the police department responded to a domestic violence call around 1:30 a.m. on Clover Street, where police say 46-year-old man attempted to kill his wife.
The suspect involved was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where he was shot by a Simi Valley police officer following an altercation that day.
