Mets 1B Jorge Polanco gets reinstated, CF Luis Robert on BRP rehab

The New York Mets have undergone several shakeups in the last few months, including firing team manager Carlos Mendoza, and will likely continue to make important roster changes throughout the season.

Mets first baseman Jorge Polanco, who was on a rehab assignment with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies back in early June, has been reinstated from the injured list, pushing Ronny Mauricio back to Triple-A Syracuse.

Along with pitchers Alex Carrillo and Guillermo Zuniga on assignment, the Mets have long-injured center fielder Luis Robert Jr. on a rehab assignment. The 28-year-old transferred from Triple-A Syracuse earlier this week and prepared to make his debut with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Tuesday.

Instead, Robert will start for the Mets’ Double-A affiliate team on Wednesday after an unexpected rain delay in Binghamton’s rather exciting 10-4, six-run comeback win against the Hartford Yard Goats forced him to sit out.

Both Robert and Polanco have had slower starts to the MLB season, with Polanco batting .179 in 14 games and Robert slashing .224/.327/.329 over the last 24 games.

Robert moved to the injured list after a lumbar spine disc herniation in late April, prompting a change from a 10-day to a 60-day rehab assignment, while Polanco had been playing in rehab games since April.

“Both of those guys still have more minor league games in front of them,” said Mets interim manager Andy Green.

While Robert still has some recovery time ahead of him, Polanco jumped back into the starting lineup and will be used as a DH for the Mets.

Although it’s unclear when Polanco will be back in full swing, Mets fans can expect to see Robert’s debut with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies at 7:10 p.m. at Dunkin Park in Hartford on Wednesday, July 8.
