After a nearly two-week closure following a fire, the Palm Springs Cultural Center will reopen with a summer blockbuster on the big screen.
The Palm Springs Cultural Center announced in an Instagram post on Tuesday, July 7, that audiences will be able to return to the theater just in time for a screening of the classic film “Jaws” at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 11. Tickets cost $12.
While the main Camelot Theatre was not damaged by the fire, restoration efforts continue in other areas of the building.
A fire started around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27, while an audience watched “The Goodbye Girl,” a 1977 movie starring Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason. The Palm Springs Fire Department said in a news release firefighters were dispatched around 7:35 p.m., and gained control of the fire by 8:18 p.m.
Eric Smith, general manager for the center, told The Desert Sun on Sunday, June 28, that the fire started in the walls of the kitchen and most of the damage had been confined to that room.
Over the past few days, the center has posted updates on its social media pages about its cleanup efforts. One video showed specialized HEPA air scrubbers and filtration equipment being used inside theaters 2 and 3 to help remove smoke particles and odors from the affected spaces.
“While important progress is being made each day, significant cleaning, restoration, and repair work still lies ahead,” the center wrote on Instagram. “We remain deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from our community. Donations continue to help fund the recovery and restoration efforts needed to bring these spaces back to life and welcome audiences once again.”
