Democratic primary results in Steuben County
In the 23rd District, St. Bonaventure University professor Aaron Gies took the Democratic nomination and will face the incumbent, Republican Nick Langworthy, in November’s general election. Gies defeated Erie County attorney Kevin Stocker. In Steuben County, Gies cruised with 1,551 votes to 326 for Stocker.
“Tonight, we proved that this race has momentum,” said Gies. “That Western New York Democrats have not given in to cynicism. There is a fierce love that still drives us to the streets … to protest, to donate, to canvass, and to vote.”
The Steuben County Democratic Committee endorsed Gies early in the primary, and he was endorsed by Indivisible Corning Elmira on June 22.
“We’ve been impressed with his ability to listen to our concerns, his depth of knowledge on how public policy impacts real families, and by his clear passion for helping our community thrive,” the local group stated.
Steuben County Democrats in the towns of Avoca, Cohocton, Dansville, Prattsburgh, Pulteney, Wayland and Wheeler voted in the 24th District race featuring Alissa J. Ellman and Diane J. Kastenbaum. Ellman was the choice of Steuben County Democrats, finishing with 126 to 64 for Kastenbaum. Ellman won the race.
The seat is currently held by Republican Claudia Tenney.
“It will be a challenge to win against Tenney in November, but Alissa is a fighter, and understands that people are fed up with the Republican status quo and want real change,” Kastenbaum said in her concession. “With the right support, Alissa has a real chance of becoming our next representative.”
In the comptroller’s race, incumbent Tom DiNapoli defeated challenges from Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle. In Chemung County, DiNapoli cruised with 1,465 votes. Warshaw received 326 and Goyle had 214.
“Tonight’s victory is a victory for every single working family in New York State, every public sector worker and first responder who relies on a secure pension, every student and senior who worries about the affordability crisis we’re facing,” DiNapoli stated.
“Our opponents tried over and over to derail our work with false attacks and reckless promises, but the people of New York once again have seen the value of steady, responsible leadership in these chaotic times.”
