Mechanicville police were asked to conduct a welfare check at an apartment on Harris Avenue after neighbors became concerned when they had not seen the resident for several days, Police Chief William Rabbitt said.

Officers arrived at the residence at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, according to a news release from the Mechanicville Police Department.

While conducting the welfare check, officers discovered six people dead inside the apartment. The victims included four children and two adults, Rabbitt said.

Authorities have not released the victims’ names or ages pending notification of family members.

What caused the deaths?

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The New York State Police is assisting with the investigation.

Rabbitt said authorities do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.

“This is a tragic incident that has deeply affected our community,” Rabbitt said. “Our thoughts are with the family members, friends and all those impacted by this loss.”

Officials have not released additional details about the incident. Autopsies were underway Wednesday.
