Like everyone else in Los Angeles, Matthew Stafford is thrilled to have Myles Garrett on the Rams. But like everyone else, he’s also upset over losing Jared Verse in the trade.
Verse was only entering his third year with the Rams but he was a locker room leader and a beloved teammate in Los Angeles. Stafford was a big fan of his, so he was disappointed to lose him.
Stafford discussed his bittersweet feelings about the trade on Chris Long’s podcast, saying that while he’s excited about Garrett, it “guts” him to lose Verse.
“Excited to have him,” Stafford said of Garrett. “Obviously, guts me to lose a guy like Verse because I loved playing with him. A guy that came in as a young player that was beyond his years in his ability and his maturity and just wish him all the best. It sucks to lose guys anytime you spend time playing with them. But excited to have Myles. Really good football player and excited for what’s to come. We’ve just got to continue to work and get after each other a little bit in practice and see if we can make each other better.”
After he was traded, Verse admitted he was upset and mad about the news. It took him some time to gather his thoughts and accept his new reality, but he’s ready to embrace this new challenge in Cleveland – as you’d expect a fiery, passionate player like him to do.
Garrett is in a similar boat to Stafford, being a talented player who played a long time for a franchise that had little postseason success. Stafford immediately took the Rams to the Super Bowl and won it in his first season, so hopefully Garrett enjoys the same result in Year 1 with Los Angeles.
But both Stafford and Garrett know it’s going to take a lot of work to reach the mountaintop, even as talented as the Rams look on paper.
