A 17-year-old boy died and seven other teenagers were injured when a car they were riding it crashed at high speed along Rancho Road in Adelanto early Sunday, authorities said.
The deadly wreck was first reported just before 2:40 a.m. June 7 along Rancho Road near Lilac Road, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Eight teenagers were riding in a 2013 Dodge Charger headed east “at an excessive speed,” sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle,” the statement said. “The vehicle left the roadway and rolled onto its side.”
At least one of the young victims was ejected from the vehicle.
All the victims were taken to hospitals with various levels of injury, authorities said. One of them, initially described only as a 17-year-old boy, died from his injuries a short time later. His identity was not yet released by county coroner’s officials.
Further details regarding the cause and circumstances of the crash remained under investigation by a Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team.
Officials shut down the roadway for about six hours as they interviewed witnesses, took measurements and collected other evidence.
No further details were available.
