Ninety-one days stand between us and Longhorns football. It’s another prediction Saturday and today’s prognosis might make some Texas fans unhappy. I believe KJ Lacey will be thrust into at least one major moment throughout the 2026 season. The backup signal caller enters another year on the bench but I’d argue it’s a given he’ll have to step up in a big moment this season.
The last three seasons of Texas football have had many similarities. Backup QBs being asked to keep CFP hopes alive has been one of them. In 2023, Maalik Murphy started two games while Quinn Ewers was hurt, getting two big wins. In 2024, it was Arch Manning getting two starts as Ewers rehabbed, again going undefeated. Last season, Matthew Caldwell never made a start, but that OT touchdown vs. Mississippi State kept the Longhorns CFP hopes alive. It’s KJ Lacey’s turn to fill those shoes.
Now, obviously it’d be ideal for Manning to have no issues, play every game and roll through the season healthy. However, given his ability to run the ball, physical running style and minor OL questions, it’s hard to feel confident an injury won’t pop up. If one does, you just hope it’s one that keeps him sidelined for a play or half, not a game or two. No matter the amount of time, KJ Lacey will have to be ready to come in and deliver.
There is no question that if Texas is going to win a National Championship, Arch Manning likely needs to be under center. However, to get to that point, it’s a near certainty he’ll need help from his backup. It’s happened every year Texas has been in the CFP or even in contention, I imagine that is not changing this season.
The good news is Lacey should be ready when his number is called. He’s been sitting behind Arch Manning for nearly two years now, learning the system and continuing to grow. He’s earned glowing reviews for Steve Sarkisian and seemingly brings that “point guard” ability that is an asset in the Sarkisain offense. There is no doubt Lacey’s number will be called in a moment Texas will need him to deliver. Whether or not he does could very well decide the Longhorns CFP fate on Selection Sunday.
