Mogadore’s Jason Garvin makes the podium
What a great story. Mogadore senior Jason Garvin fouled out in the state long jump a year ago. He fouled his first attempt this year as well. But his second jump was a beauty, a 21-10, to launch him into the finals. The final jump of his high school career was even better, a 22-2 to finish fifth in the state!
Much more to come on Garvin!
Southeast 3,200 relay finishes 18th
Our day starts with a very smart decision, in my opinion, to rest Julia Wheeler in Southeast’s 3,200 relay.
Wheeler will be running the Bridget Franek at this state meet, with the 3,200 later today and the 800 and 1,600 tomorrow. Given all that and given that the podium was going to be a stretch anyway, Southeast smartly rested Wheeler and went with what turned out to be a very young and exciting relay. Junior Jenna Canale, sophomore Grace Wheeler and freshmen Emma Smith and Vayda Stelzer combined to cross the line in 10:33.35 to finish 18th.
Canale was particularly impressive. She actually sat fourth after a blazing opening 400 (1:06.72) and certainly proved that she can run with the best in the state. What a great experience going forward for the Pirates.
What Portage County athletes are competing on Day 1 of the OHSAA state tournament?
The first day of the state tournament will only feature Division IV and Division V athletes locally. Southeast senior Julia Wheeler is set to run twice on June 4. She’ll compete in the 3,200 meters, in which she finished fifth in the state in a year ago. She has the second-fastest seed time this year. What’s new this season is that Wheeler is bringing some teammates with her as the Pirates 3,200 relay was second at the Austintown regional meet to earn an automatic bid. She was joined in that regional run by her younger sister, Grace, as well as Jenna Canale and Vayda Stelzer.
The day will also include Waterloo’s David Lindsay — the Vikings’ first state qualifier since 2016 — in the 110 hurdles.
