Three bold SEC football predictions for the 2026 season

The month of June has finally arrived, and the countdown to talking season has officially begun with no shortage of storylines across the Southeastern Conference.

From Steve Sarkisian’s comments on scheduling to Lane Kiffin’s bold interview with Vanity Fair, the drama entering the 2026-27 SEC football campaign is at a fever-pitch. The expansion to a nine-game conference schedule makes this year’s ventures more intriguing, as the league’s teams prepare to battle new foes and familiar rivals for an opportunity to reach Atlanta.

That includes Texas A&M, which is coming off its first appearance in the College Football Playoff and first 11-0 start to a season since 1992. While the Aggies lost much production, especially on the defensive side of the ball, they reloaded with talented transfers and incoming freshmen who have the potential to lead the Maroon and White back to the CFP.

While that may be a bold take for some, that is what this time of the year is all about. Predictions, hype, and opinions flow from fans, journalists, and analysts across the country for what each team could achieve this year.

Here are three hottest takes for the SEC this season that you may not agree with, but could come to fruition in a chaos-filled league:

Ole Miss reaches the SEC Championship Game for the first time in program history

Despite losing their head coach after the Egg Bowl, Ole Miss gathered itself for a historic run in the playoffs, defeating Tulane and Georgia to advance to the semi-finals, before losing a nail-biter to Miami last season. After taking the NCAA to court, the Rebels retained Heisman-contending quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who was a breakout star. Combine that with Kewan Lacy’s return, who is one of the most explosive running backs in the country, and Ole Miss could be primed for another massive run under Pete Golding.

Kiffin’s move to LSU, as Ole Miss was preparing for the CFP, will prove to be a mistake when it’s all said and done. The Rebels have the talent, motivation and environment at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to make another massive run. While the schedule is grueling, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Rebels playing for the SEC Championship come December.

Texas A&M defeats LSU… AGAIN

For the second consecutive season, Texas A&M will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in Week 4 to face the LSU Tigers. This time around, Mike Elko will face off against Kiffin, who is an offensive mastermind with Arizona State transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt at the helm. The Aggies should boast a 3-0 record entering the contest in Death Valley, but the potential lack of depth on defense could prove to be an issue at times this season.

New offensive and defensive coordinators could provide slight changes to playstyle, but Texas A&M has the talent to become one of the most electrifying offenses in the conference in 2026. What Elko is building in Bryan-College Station is undeniable and deserves more respect. With LSU coming off a heated road contest against Ole Miss the week before, the spot is favorable for another Tiger takedown in Baton Rouge this season.

Florida finishes the season with eight wins or more in its first year under Sumrall

After leading the Green Wave to their first appearance in the CFP, Jon Sumrall is taking over the reins in Gainesville, Florida. Sumrall is a proven winner who has the opportunity to completely turn around the Gators’ football program, which is in desperate need of saving.

Sumrall revamped Troy and Tulane into winning programs with a pedigree built on defying the odds and exceeding expectations. He has succeeded everywhere he’s been, but coaching in the SEC is an entirely different beast.

While the starting quarterback position remains undecided entering the summer, Florida has one of the most talented wide receiving corps in the country to pair with either Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones Jr., both of whom have impressed during the offseason. The return of running back Jadan Baugh, after he became the first player in program history to rush for over 1,000 yards in his freshman season, could spell trouble for the teams on Florida’s schedule in 2026. Sumrall leading the Gators to eight wins or more in his first season could mark the beginning of an incredible era in The Swamp.
