There were 5,512 votes cast in the race for the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Granite Hills swimmer Sosetina Esquibel ended with 65.95% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The freshman received 2,316 votes, beating out seven other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Esquibel placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.51 seconds. She also swam on Granite Hills’ 4×50 freestyle relay team that finished in 1:48.84 and the fifth-place 4×100 freestyle relay team that finished in 4:04.86. At the prelims on May 5, Esquibel placed fourth in the 50 freestyle at 25.84 seconds.
In the voting, Esquibel beat University Prep’s Jocelyn Lopez, who received 25.74% at 904 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between May 4 and 9.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week’s games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
