Two arrested in shooting of Milwaukee courthouse security guard

Milwaukee police arrested two people in the May 8 fatal shooting of a courthouse security guard.

On May 9, officers arrested a 25-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man in the shooting of 56-year-old Dennis Johnson, a Milwaukee Police Department spokesperson said in an email. The shooting happened on the 3000 block of North Teutonia Avenue when a suspect fired several gunshots in a car, striking Johnson.

The shooting appeared to stem from an argument and the suspects and Johnson knew one another, the spokesperson said. Currently, police are not seeking other suspects, but the investigation is ongoing.

Johnson was a Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office employee who worked as security at the county courthouse.

Family and friends told the Journal Sentinel he was selfless. His sister Lisa Beatty disliked driving and so he often drove her around the city when she asked him to. Johnson frequented family get togethers, whether that was baby showers, basketball games or birthday parties, she said.

At a memorial the day after his shooting, family and friends honored Johnson and called for more to be done to stop violence in the city.

“He’d drop whatever he could to help,” she said.

In a statement, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office lamented Johnson’s death.

“Every senseless killing is a tragedy,” said Sheriff Denita Ball in a statement. “However, because [Public Safety Officer] Johnson was a member of our family, this one hits home.”
