Vote for Ames Tribune male Athlete of the Week for Oct. 12-18

The week of Oct. 12-18 was another busy one of Iowa high school football featuring teams from the Ames area.

Gilbert, the No. 8 team in Class 4A, improved to 8-0 with a 55-6 win over Des Moines North and 3A No. 8 Nevada won a 21-14 battle over No. 7 Des Moines Christian. Roland-Story wrapped up the regular season with a 62-6 drubbing of Oelwein and Ballard handled Bondurant-Farrar by a 30-14 score.

Ames fell to Dallas Center-Grimes in 5A by a score of 45-3. In 8-player football Collins-Maxwell ended its regular season with a heartbreaking 50-47 loss to Clarksville and Colo-NESCO hammered GMG by a 44-6 score.

Roland-Story and Collins-Maxwell will both begin playoff competition in 2A and 8-player football, respectively, this upcoming week. 

The week of Oct. 12-18 also saw conference meets take place in boys cross country. Ames competed in the Iowa Alliance Conference meet, Ballard and Gilbert in the Raccoon River Conference meet, Nevada and Roland-Story in the Heart of Iowa Conference meet and Collins-Maxwell and Colo-NESCO in the Iowa Star Conference meet.

There were several standout performances by male high school athletes from the Ames area during the week.

Luke Thoreson, Roland-Story

Thoreson set a Roland-Story record with 14 receptions in a game during the Norsemen football team’s 62-6 victory over Oelwein on Oct. 17 at Kerry Van Winkle Field in Story City.

Thoreson made 14 grabs for 125 yards and four touchdowns to help Roland-Story clinch the 2A District 4 championship.

Cooper Wierson, Collins-Maxwell

Wierson had a huge game in defeat for the Collins-Maxwell football team during the Spartans’ 50-47 loss at Clarksville on Oct. 17.

Wierson ran the ball 25 times for 222 yards and three touchdowns. The Spartan quarterback also completed 16 of 30 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

Logan Bleich, Gilbert

Bleich led the 3A No. 1 Gilbert cross country team to the Raccoon River Conference championship by winning the individual title during the varsity boys race at the RRC meet on Oct. 14 in Bondurant.

Bleich broke 15 minutes with a 5-kilometer time of 14:57.50 to win the race by over 47 seconds.

Austin Waldera, Nevada

Waldera ran for over 100 yards to help the 3A No. 8 Nevada football team take down No. 7 Des Moines Christian, 21-14, on Oct. 17 at Des Moines.

Waldera finished with 118 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. He also made 4.5 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, at linebacker.

Preston Voelker, Colo-NESCO

Voelker led an impressive defensive effort by the Colo-NESCO football team during its 44-6 victory over GMG to close out 8-player District 6 play on Oct. 17 at Colo.

Voelker finished the game with seven tackles, including five solo stops. He also recorded a pair of sacks on the night.
