A longtime Ames restaurant is temporarily closed after an interior fire.
Around 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, the Ames Fire Department fielded calls for black smoke coming from the roof near the main entrance of North Grand Mall.
Crews found flames and smoke coming from the ventilation hood exhaust system that served the Flame N Skewer restaurant. Interior crews found smoke inside the restaurant as well.
The fire was “quickly contained and extinguished,” a City of Ames press release said. Firefighters then conducted “extensive overhaul operations” to make sure the fire was put out and hadn’t spread further into the mall.
The mall was evacuated, but no injuries were reported, the press release said.
Ames Fire Chief Rich Higgins said the fire was cooking-related and started on the cooktop in the restaurant’s kitchen.
Flame N Skewer suffered smoke, fire, and water damage. There was also some minor water and smoke damage to the vacant space next door.
Flame N Skewer, which opened in 1975, will be closed for the “unforeseeable future,” according to their Facebook page.
