The week of Oct. 12-18 was another action-packed week of female high school athletics in the Ames area.
Conference meets in girls cross country took place during the week. Ames won the Iowa Alliance Conference meet, Gilbert took first and Ballard third at the Raccoon River Conference meet, Roland-Story placed fourth and Nevada fifth at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet and Collins-Maxwell first at the Iowa Star Conference meet.
It was also a busy week of high school volleyball, highlighted by Ballard’s sweep of Gilbert and four-set victory over Bondurant-Farrar that gave the Class 4A No. 11 Bombers their first RRC title.
There were several outstanding performances from Ames-area female athletes during the week.

Brenna Baumgardner, Ballard
Baumgardner had a huge match at outside hitter for the 4A No. 11 Ballard volleyball team during its 25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 25-13 victory over Bondurant-Farrar that clinched the RRC title for the Bombers on Oct. 16 at Huxley.
Baumgardner finished the match with 20 kills on an outstanding 56.7% efficiency rate. She also had two digs, one block and one ace in helping Ballard finish a perfect 8-0 in the conference.
Emma Stanley, Ames
Stanley claimed her first individual Iowa Alliance Conference championship during the varsity girls race at the conference meet on Oct. 15 in Ottumwa.
Stanley ran a 5-kilometer time of 18 minutes, 40.2 seconds to win the race by 27.8 seconds over Des Moines Roosevelt’s Isabel Spradling and help bring home the team championship for the Little Cyclones.
Keira Andersen, Gilbert
Andersen won a competitive varsity girls race at the RRC cross country meet in Bondurant on Oct. 13.
Andersen clocked in with a 5k time of 18:50.82 to beat Winterset’s Ava Hope by 24.44 seconds for the individual conference title. Andersen’s effort helped Gilbert edge Winterset by two points (64 to 66) for the conference team title.
Jayden Peters, Collins-Maxwell
Peters was crowned the Iowa Star Conference individual champion during the varsity girls race at the conference meet on Oct. 16 at Wartburg College in Waverly.
Peters completed the 5k course in 19:28.3 to edge Riceville’s Claire Zweibohmer by 9.2 seconds for the win in the varsity girls race. Peters helped Collins-Maxwell claim the girls team championship with 26 points.
Caitlyn Flattebo, Roland-Story
Flattebo had a strong match to help the 3A No. 12 Roland-Story volleyball team clinch the Heart of Iowa Conference championship with a 25-19, 25-7, 25-22 sweep over Greene Count on Oct. 13 at Story City.
Flattebo finished the match with eight kills on 30% efficency. She also had 10 digs, three aces and one assist.
