Wisconsin Rapids teen dead & another airlifted after rollover crash in Portage County

GRANT − A Wisconsin Rapids teen is dead and another was taken by helicopter to Marshfield Medical Center after a one-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in Portage County.

The crash happened about 1 a.m. July 5 on Evergreen Avenue, west of 110th Street, in the town of Grant.

The initial investigation found a pick-up truck with four teens inside was traveling east on Evergreen Avenue. The vehicle lost control, hit an embankment and overturned, landing on its roof. The driver and front seat passenger were both partially ejected from the vehicle, according to a news release from the Portage County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the truck, a 17-year-old boy from Wisconsin Rapids, was flown by Life Link helicopter to Marshfield Medical Center. The front seat passenger, an 18-year-old man from Wisconsin Rapids, died at the scene. The rear seat passengers, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman both from Wisconsin Rapids, were not injured in the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by United Ambulance, Plainfield FireDepartment, Grand Rapids Fire Department, Grant EMR, Life Link and the Portage County MedicalExaminer. The Wisconsin State Patrol responded for technical crash investigation.
