An 18-year-old man was rescued from a canal in Indio when Indio Police Department responded to a drowning on Saturday.

At approximately 12:32 p.m. on June 28, Indio police said they responded to a report of a possible drowning in the canal near Golf Center Parkway and Avenue 42, where they located a man submerged in the water.

Police did not identify the man in a news release.

An officer pulled the unresponsive man to the surface and administered chest compressions before the 18-year-old regained consciousness and became alert.

Indio police said that the man fell into the canal while attempting to rescue his dog, a German shepherd, that had fallen in.

Cal Fire also responded to the scene and rescued the dog, which appeared uninjured.

The 18-year-old was transported to JFK Memorial Hospital for further evaluation but appeared to be in stable condition, police said.
