Need to fly but don't have your REAL ID yet? Be sure to bring one of these alternatives

The nationwide enforcement of the REAL ID kicks in today, meaning travelers will need the updated form of identification or an authorized alternative to fly within the U.S.

But there’s no need to panic for those who haven’t been able to score an appointment with the DMV. There are several other forms of identification you can use to get through TSA, though you’ll need to be prepared.

What is a Real ID?

The REAL ID is a driver’s license or ID card that’s federally accepted as a form of identification.

Why do you need a REAL ID?

Starting May 7, you will need the REAL ID or an acceptable alternative to fly domestically, access federal facilities or enter nuclear power plants. The Department of Homeland Security explains on its website that “the purpose of REAL ID is to make our identity documents more consistent and secure.”

REAL IDs are identifiable by the gold star in their upper-right hand corner. A sample ID can be seen below.

What to do if you haven’t gotten a REAL ID by May 7

You can use your passport or one of several other accepted forms of identification if you have not yet gotten your REAL ID. Alternatives include permanent resident cards and foreign government-issued passports. A full list of options can be found on the TSA website here.

You can check the Illinois SOS website to find your nearest DMV and schedule an appointment if necessary.
