Wisconsin men's basketball GM reveals plan for final roster spot

The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball program still has an open roster spot.

Isaac Riddle became the 14th member of the 2026-27 roster back on April 23, but longtime head coach Greg Gard still has that 15th spot to fill.

Wisconsin was extremely busy in the portal after losing the likes of Nick Boyd and John Blackwell, but now they’re tasked with adding a 15th player while time is working against them.

“We’re trying to stay flexible, stay adaptable, knowing the time crunch that we’re on a little bit as well,” said Marc VandeWettering, the UW MBB general manager.

VandeWettering told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe, “We’ve added a lot of depth in the backcourt. As we looked at it, we wanted to make sure we had equal depth in the frontcourt as well.”

“If there’s a piece that happens to fall in our lap that makes a lot of sense, then we’ll pursue that,” he added. “We built the roster to be flexible as well. We’ve got a lot of guys that can play small-ball fours.”

Wisconsin is, of course, keeping an eye on the ongoing lawsuit that could grant Braeden Carrington another year of eligibility. Other than that, they’re dipping their toes in the international market but don’t want to go all-in due to the NCAA’s new five-in-five eligibility model.
