Stanton Collemer, CEO of Cancer Alliance of Help and Hope, says there’s a good reason why the Palm Beach home he inherited from his long-time partner, the late Ricardo “Rick” Marcel Hurtado, looks so pristine.
“We each had our own residences and enjoyed our own spaces, but Rick actually spent a lot of time at my house in West Palm Beach,” Collemer says. “We entertained at my house, and as far as cooking, I was the cook. In his kitchen, the oven had never been used.”
Hurtado, a chemist, was born in Bogota, Colombia. After earning his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Miami, he taught medical students there before returning to Bogota to run his family’s pharmaceutical business after his father died.
Eventually, Hurtado returned to Miami, and in 2001, he bought the Palm Beach house at 222 Monterey Road on the North End.
With the help of Palm Beach architect Pat Segraves, Hurtado completely rebuilt the midblock residence, which stands on a quarter-acre lot about a half mile north of the Palm Beach Country Club.
“Palm Beach was very special to him. He wanted a little place that was like a safe haven for himself, a little piece of paradise. It was his retreat, his happy place,” Collemer says.
Hurtado died in March, and Collemer has listed the three-bedroom, four-bath home on Monterey Road for sale. With 4,761 square feet of living space, inside and out, the residence is priced at $10.9 million and co-listed by Douglas Elliman agents Chris Cox and Michelle Kirschner. The furniture can be purchased separately.
The exterior of the house reflects Hurtado’s love of Nantucket-style architecture, Collemer says.
“He was inspired by the coastal look, and he liked the artwork of his friend, Russell Sharon, which inspired the modern interior design look.”
Details throughout the residence include impact-resistant windows and doors, plantation shutters at the windows and a built-in audio system. Downstairs, floors are covered in marble, with wood flooring upstairs. The bathrooms are all finished in marble.
The two-story foyer is flanked by the dining room and a guest bedroom suite that Hurtado used as an office. Straight on from the foyer is the open-concept living room and kitchen.
A gas fireplace is a focal point in this area. Dormer windows act as clerestories to bring natural light into the space, which is crowned by a vaulted ceiling.
The nearby center-island Poggenpohl kitchen is finished with granite countertops and high-end appliances.
Street-facing rooms open to the front porch, while French doors from the living and breakfast areas open to the pool patio.
Encompassing one wing, the main bedroom suite also has doors to the pool and back garden.
On the other side of the house are the laundry room, a cabana bath for the pool and an attached two-car garage with a electric-vehicle charging station.
Upstairs, a large bedroom suite is set up as a family room.
Collemer says the location of the house was prime attraction for Hurtado.
“He liked Monterey Road because it was quiet, tucked between the Intracoastal (Waterway) and the Atlantic Ocean. When the windows are open, you can hear the ocean. It’s just such a tranquil place” Collemer says.
“I hope the new owners will appreciate the home as much as we did.”
