WIAA girls state swimming and diving teams and athletes to watch this weekend

What: The 56th annual WIAA girls swimming and diving championships.

When: Division 2 will be held Nov. 14, beginning with the diving competition at 1:30 p.m. and swimming finals to begin at 5:30 p.m. The Division 1 diving competition will begin at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 15, with swimming finals to begin at 2:30 p.m.

Where: Waukesha South High School Natatorium.

Tickets: Available online through WIAA ticketing partner GoFan, for $9 virtual tickets to be redeemed on a mobile device.

Order of events: Diving, 200-yard medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 400 freestyle relay.

Broadcast: Every event of the state swimming and diving championships is streamed live on WIAA.TV, a subscription portal of the NFHS Network.

2024 team state champions: Division 1 — Middleton; Division 2 — Whitefish Bay.

Teams to beat at the WIAA state girls swimming and diving meet

Division 1

In the latest Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association poll from Nov. 9, defending champion Middleton (615 points) held its top ranking in Division 1 over Arrowhead (542), Verona Area (402), Menomonee Falls/Hamilton (367) and Muskego (349). Points are awarded based on submitted top times, with the top 30 individual results receiving one-to-30 points in one-point increments and relays receiving two-to-60 points in two-point increments.

Division 2

Defending D2 champion Whitefish Bay leads the Nov. 9 WISCA poll (746), followed by Madison Edgewood (598), Rhinelander (453), Shorewood (433) and Kohler Co-op (307).

Milwaukee area athletes to watch at WIAA state girls swimming and diving

Division 1

Avery Antoniewski, Waukesha South/Mukwonago

Last year’s runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke in her freshman debut returns as the fifth seed in that event, while also holding the eighth seed in a 200 IM event she placed 12th in last year.

Ella Antoniewski, Waukesha South/Mukwonago

The three-time champion in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events is the favorite in her pursuit of a four-peat, holding the top seeds in both events.

Caden Kelly, Germantown

Kelly ended her junior campaign at state with top-seven finishes in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle. She returns as the third seed in the butterfly and fourth seed in the 200 freestyle.

Emmy Meyer, Muskego

The senior took fifths in both the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle last year, events she holds the second and fifth seeds in this weekend, respectively.

Kendall Rummel, Divine Savior Holy Angels

The senior and Cornell commit is the defending state champion in the 1-meter dive and carries the second-best seed score into the 2025 state championships.

Emily Scargill, Menomonee Falls/Hamilton

The junior sprint specialist holds the No. 3 seed in the 50 freestyle and the No. 5 seed in the 100 butterfly this weekend.

Lindsey Schlegel, Muskego

The senior placed fifth in the 50 freestyle last year and returns as the second seed in that event as well as the third seed in the 100 freestyle.

Caroline Wanezek, Brookfield East

Wanezek finished on the podium in the 200 IM (fourth) and 100 butterfly (fifth) last year, and returns as the No. 2 seed in the IM and No. 1 seed in the butterfly this year.

Division 2

Anne Dickinson, Whitefish Bay

The former sprint specialist stretched out to the 200 and 500 freestyle last year to great success, winning gold in both events. She returns as the top seed in both events.

Maggie Dickinson, Whitefish Bay

After tallying four golds including two relays in her freshman debut, Dickinson is back as the top-seeded defending champion in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. She set the state record in the backstroke with her time of :53.28 last year.

Aibhy King, Whitefish Bay

The 2024 gold medalist in the 100 butterfly returns as the top seed in that event, as well as the third seed in the 200 IM.

Tess Miota, Shorewood

Last year’s ninth-place finisher in both the 200 IM and 100 butterfly returns with the eighth-best seed time in the IM and the third-best in the butterfly.

Jessica Thompson, Wauwatosa West

Returning to state for the first time since a sixth-place finish in 2023, Thompson carries the second-best seed score in the 1-meter dive into state weekend.
