MILWAUKEE — It certainly was a memorable evening for the Ozaukee/Random Lake girls soccer co-op on Thursday, June 19, making its debut at the WIAA state girls soccer tournament at Uihlein Soccer Park.
The co-op dominated the second-seeded Washburn Castle Guards on the stat sheet but required a shootout to advance to the Division 4 state championship.
No. 3 Ozaukee/Random Lake prevailed 7-6 in penalty kicks after the match was level at 1-1 after two overtimes.
Mya Ternes made the match-winning penalty kick goal in the eighth round.
It’s the first time the co-op will play for a championship although Ozaukee has won four titles in six trips as a standalone program.
Despite controlling much of the match, it was Washburn which scored first in the 26th minute when Sienna Sandor corralled a corner kick by teammate Maddie Ludwig and found the back of the net.
The Ozaukee/Random Lake co-op, which also goes by the name Cedar Valley due to the Cedar Valley cheese factory and store between the two schools, understood sometimes the best delicacies need to age properly.
Kamrin Kunz scored in the 59th minute for the co-op as teammate Madeline Prom sent a cross into the box which was finished by Kunz.
Washburn did its best to play defense, with Ozaukee/Random Lake outshooting the Castle Guards 24-3, and it remained deadlocked through 100 minutes of action.
Once the penalty shootout began, neither team would miss as the first six kick takers all scored.
The goalkeepers though won the seventh round, forcing Ternes’s heroics to help the co-op move on to face No. 1 Xavier at 1:30 on June 21.
Ozaukee/Random Lake’s Rebecca Kraemer stopped the final two shots she faced of the shootout.
