The Milwaukee Brewers have a run differential of plus-45, while the St. Louis Cardinals have scored the same amount of runs as their pitching staff has surrendered.
But the math doesn’t exactly add up.
Despite that rather large gap, it’s the Cardinals who have a slight lead in the standings when the two National League Central Division rivals begin a three-game series Monday night, May 4 at Busch Stadium.
Winners of six of their last seven games, the Cardinals are one of the early surprises of the 2026 season. In addition to winning 20 of their first 34 games, they’re 6-1 against teams over .500.
Jordan Walker’s hot start is a big reason for the Cardinals’ success. Walker has 10 home runs and the team has 34, tied for fourth in the majors. The Brewers are 29th out of 30 teams with 23.

Milwaukee is expected to get first baseman Andrew Vaughn back for the series and perhaps outfielder Jackson Chourio at some point this week. That could help flip a switch on the Brewers’ early power outage.
The Cardinals had an impressive 6-1 road trip against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers, but are 9-9 in home games. The Brewers have won four of six over Arizona and Washington.
