Second person dies after April 9 crash in Appleton

The Appleton Police Department announced a second person, Alan Hopfensperger, died after an April 9 crash when a man didn’t stop at a red light.

He died May 2, about a week after his wife, Margaret Hopfensperger, died from injuries in the same crash April 24. Alan Hopfensperger, 67, was in the hospital since the crash because of his injuries, the police department said May 4.

He was driving when a 17-year-old man failed to stop at a red traffic signal and crashed into the Hopfenspergers’ vehicle at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Meade Street in Appleton.

Police said alcohol was in the teen’s system. Officers found one vehicle overturned and the other in a parking lot off the road when they arrived at the crash.

Police recommended charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, homicide by use of a vehicle with prohibited alcohol content and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle causing great bodily harm. The crash remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe fundraiser for the Hopfensperger family has raised over $10,000 as of May 4.
