Only about 25 U.S. movie theaters are among those showing Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” in the director’s preferred format, 70mm IMAX. And, it’s not looking like any of them are in Wisconsin.
A small handful of theaters around here, though, mainly in the Milwaukee area, will offer it in 70mm or IMAX. A lot of cinemas across the state, however, will be showing it in other formats.
In his review, USA TODAY movie critic Brian Truitt described “The Odyssey” − which is a fantasy adaptation of the Homer classic − as “a Trojan Horse of filmmaking, with a war movie, history lesson, monster mash, body horror flick, moody zombie fest, maritime disaster extravaganza and father-son tale all scrunched together in a spectacular package.”
The critic lauded the star-studded cast, calling Matt Damon’s portrayal of Odysseus Oscar-worthy. And, as for Nolan, Truitt called the film “the greatest work on the iconic director’s noteworthy résumé” (you can read his full review here).
It’s already made history, being the first narrative film to be shot entirely using IMAX film cameras.
Nolan recommends seeing the film in 70mm IMAX, which offers the highest resolution and largest screen you can see it on. But, that’s far easier said than done, with just over two dozen theaters nationwide showing it that way.
The film hits theaters Friday, July 17, with some preview screenings Thursday, July 16.
