OSHKOSH − Residents in Winnebago and Fond du Lac counties were advised to seek shelter from hail, lightning and a possible tornado Monday afternoon as the area dealt with a severe weather system that left more than 11,000 households without power.
The region was under a tornado and severe thunderstorm warning until 1 p.m. July 27, with the National Weather Service warning of 3-inch hail and likely flying debris from 60 mph wind gusts.
The National Weather Service is expecting fallen trees along with damage to roofs, windows and vehicles. Mobile homes may also be damaged or destroyed.
Residents are asked to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a well-built building away from windows. People who are outdoors are advised to move to the closest substantial shelter away from possible flying debris.
Up to 1 p.m., We Energies reported 8,229 customers without power as a result of the severe system.
The Menasha Police Department issued a news release saying authorities were working with the Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue Department, Department of Public Works and public safety partners in responding to areas impacted by severe weather.
The department said emergency responders were assessing damage, addressing hazards and responding to calls for service.
