Packers re-signing core special teamer Nick Niemann

The Green Bay Packers are re-signing linebacker and core special teamer Nick Niemann, according to Bill Huber of Packers on SI.

The re-signing of Niemann continues a busy day on the linebacker front in Green Bay: Multiple reports say the Packers are trading for veteran Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin as an expected replacement for soon-to-be free agent Quay Walker.

Per Huber, the deal is for one year. Niemann, who would have been an unrestricted free agent, played on a $1,170,000 base salary in 2025.

Niemann’s return to Green Bay is less about playing linebacker and all about special teams. Last season, Niemann produced 10 solo tackles and two assisted tackles across eight games. He missed nine games after suffering a torn pectoral muscle in Week 8 but returned for the Packers’ playoff loss in Chicago. At the time of his injury, Niemann led the NFL in total special teams tackles.

Re-signing Niemann should give new special teams coordinator Cam Achord a core player to build his group around. Niemann played snaps on kick and punt coverage and kick and punt return in 2025.

Niemann is re-joining a linebacker group that includes Edgerrin Cooper, Isaiah McDuffie, Ty’Ron Hopper and Jamon Johnson. Franklin will be the addition once the trade is finalized to start the new league year.
