The New York Knicks encountered a double-digit second-half deficit in Game 1 of the NBA Finals to the San Antonio Spurs just as they did in their previous series opener following another extended layoff.
But they did what they only know how to do during the playoffs.
Win.
The 105-95 victory over the Spurs on June 3 was the Knicks’ 12th straight in the playoffs, a streak that began April 25 in the first round. Seven of the wins during this winning streak have come away from Madison Square Garden, with all of the road victories coming by double digits.
Can they continue this historic run and take a 2-0 series lead back to Madison Square Garden or will the Spurs respond and even the series?
Game 2 is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 5 at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
Knicks guard Jalen Brunson will look to deliver another big game after his clutch showing when he scored 13 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead three-pointer in front of the Spurs’ bench with 1:50 left. The Knicks would score the game’s final 11 points as they outscored the Spurs by 10 in the quarter and 17 in the second half. OG Anunoby was also instrumental in the win, scoring 12 of his 17 points in the final period.
The Spurs and star Victor Wembanyama will seek a bounce back shooting night in Game 2 after a rough NBA Finals opener. The team shot just 36% from the field and 26% from distance. The 95 points were their fewest in their 19 playoff games this season and it was the first time they were held below 100 points this postseason.
Despite having a team-high 26 points, Wembanyama was just 6 of 21 from the field and 2 for 9 on three-pointers (he was 12 of 13 from the free-throw line). It was his second-worst shooting performance of the playoffs.
