The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the events leading to a deputy-involved rollover crash involving multiple vehicles May 23 near North 12th and West Vliet streets.
Several people reported minor injuries, including the sheriff’s deputy, and one was taken to a local hospital for a possible drug overdose and remains in custody.
According to the sheriff’s office, the chain of events began around 7 p.m. near North 35th Street and West North Avenue. A Parks Patrol Unit deputy spotted a vehicle reported stolen out of Illinois by a Chicago-area police department.
The vehicle was initially unoccupied when the deputy requested backup before approaching. As backup arrived, three individuals entered the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
Multiple MCSO units boxed the vehicle in and took all three into custody. Authorities released two passengers shortly afterwards. The driver, who had drug paraphernalia on him, was taken into custody on a charge of operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
While transporting the driver to the Milwaukee Criminal Justice Facility, the deputy noticed the man became unresponsive in the backseat of the squad car. The deputy diverted to an area hospital instead.
The deputy was traveling southbound on North 12th Street with emergency lights and sirens on when it entered the intersection of West Vliet Street and struck an eastbound vehicle. The impact caused that vehicle to roll over, and the collision sent the squad car careening into another vehicle.
The occupants of the rollover vehicle reported minor, non-life-threatening injuries, as did the driver of the vehicle struck by the squad. The deputy suffered minor injuries from the vehicle’s airbag deploying.
The man in custody was treated at the scene with NARCAN by emergency medical personnel to revive him. He was later transferred to a local hospital, where he remains in custody and under medical care.
