Milwaukee area teams to watch

The Milwaukee area will send nine teams to WIAA state, led by seven in D1. Franklin, Hartford Union, Homestead, Kettle Moraine, Slinger, Whitefish Bay and defending D1 champion Marquette make up the area representation among the 16 total D1 state qualifiers. Lake Country Lutheran and University School of Milwaukee also qualified in D2.

In the latest Wisconsin Golf Coaches Association rankings posted prior to sectional competition May 26, Marquette (10th) was the leading area ranked team that would go on to qualify for state in D1 with 21 voting points. Kettle Moraine (2), Homestead (1) and Slinger (1) also appeared as others receiving votes. Lake Country Lutheran (43) appeared fourth in D2 behind Winneconne (66), Edgewood (62) and defending D2 team champion Seymour (55), the latter of which did not qualify for state.

Milwaukee area individuals to watch

Jonathan Amtmann, sr., Arrowhead: The Warhawks narrowly missed team state qualification, but will still send Amtmann and junior Ryan Schulz. The senior is making his state debut after tying Vance Reiland of Homestead’s medalist score of 70 at the Brookfield Sectional. He tied for third with his score of 71 at the 6-A Regional at Mee-Kwon Park.

Henry Bechthold, sr., University School of Milwaukee: The senior has made great strides individually to help lead USM to its third straight WIAA state appearance and 12th in program history this spring. After finishing tied for 46th individually at state as a junior, Bechthold took second (75) at the Kettle Moraine Lutheran Sectional at Washington County to lead the Wildcats to state.

Thomas Began, sr., Whitefish Bay: The first half of the Blue Dukes senior duo that has led them for much of the season, Began placed fifth (72) at the Brookfield Sectional as Whitefish Bay’s leading contributor to the state-qualifying effort. His score of 73 at Brown Deer Park in the 6-B regional was good for third.

Charles Davis, so., Slinger: The Owls made it back to state for the sixth time in program history and first since 2014 led by some surprising play from the sophomore down the stretch. He tied for second at Regional 4-A at Old Hickory (76) and joined two others in second as well at the Fond du Lac Sectional (77).

Jacob Gerend, sr., Whitefish Bay: Whitefish Bay earned its 38th WIAA state tournament appearance and first since 2008 with a great lift from Gerend down the stretch. The senior tied for the top 18-hole score at the 6-B Regional with his score of 72. He finished a stroke behind Began in seventh (73) at the Brookfield Sectional.

Alex Kuepper, jr., Hartford Union: A year after 2025 graduate Owen Kuepper finished fourth at state, could another Kuepper make a run at state gold? Alex won the Fond du Lac Sectional (71) at Rolling Meadows by six strokes to also lead a sectional title win (318) by a single stroke over Slinger (319).

Liam Morn, sr., Kettle Moraine: The Lasers (303) won a competitive race for the second and final qualifying spot out of the Waukesha South Sectional at Nagawaukee, led by Morn’s 74 to tie for fourth individually. He shot 74 as well at the 7-A Regional (T-second) en route to making his state debut.

Hayes Packee, jr., Marquette: A season after finishing tied for fifth individually as part of the Hilltoppers’ team title-winning effort, Packee has led Marquette back to state. The junior shot a 71 good for a tie for second in Regional 7-B, which he followed with a 74 to tie for fourth at the Waukesha South Sectional.

Caleb Peterson, jr., Franklin: The junior who tied for 27th at state a season ago led Franklin to state for the seventh time in program history with two postseason performances near the top of the leaderboard. At the 8-B Regional at Oakwood Park, Peterson tied for medalist (76). At Franklin’s host sectional at Brown Deer, Peterson placed third (73).

Lucas Piacsek, sr., Waukesha North: The senior is no stranger to the state tournament, placing tied for 38th in the 2024 state meet. After tying for second with Morn at the 7-A Regional (74), Piacsek won sectional medalist (69) to qualify individually out of the Waukesha South Sectional.

Vance Reiland, sr., Homestead: The medalist of the Brookfield Sectional (70) led Homestead back to state for the second consecutive year and 35th in WIAA history. In his state debut in 2025, he placed 20th overall individually.

Max Zastrow, jr., Lake Country Lutheran: LCL is making the program’s third WIAA state team appearance after winning the Kettle Moraine Lutheran Sectional by 17 strokes (309). Zastrow was the event medalist (71) at Regional 4-B at Kettle Hills before placing fifth at the sectional (77).
