A Big Ten head coach took an opportunity to snipe at Notre Dame football’s independence this week.
Following comments from Notre Dame Athletic Director Pete Bevacqua during Wednesday’s Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the Protect College Sports Act, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema took to social media to take a jab at the message. While Bevacqua discussed a hypothetical “super league” model which would maximize media value in college football, Bielema suggested a far simpler solution.
“Some guys really like to talk about something that could happen and who they might play,” Bielema wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Actually it’s pretty easy – just join a conference.”
Bielema’s remark resonated because it echoed a longstanding sentiment among coaches, administrators and fans. Notre Dame remains one of the few high-profile programs that operates independently in football, a status that provides scheduling flexibility and exclusive media arrangements but also draws it’s share of criticism.
Supporters of Bielema’s stance also point to the evolving landscape of college athletics, where conference affiliation directly correlates to access to revenue streams, playoff positioning and long-term stability. In that context, continuing to stay independent can be perceived as being the outlier and any input given should be disregarded.
Notre Dame continues to defend its independence as a core identity of the university, however Bielema’s comments reflect a broader push for alignment in an era full of realignment. His message, as brief as it may have been, ensures the conversation is far from over.
