Manitowoc man who rejected plea deal sentenced to 9 years in prison in 2023 overdose death

MANITOWOC – Christopher L. Ducat, 38, was sentenced to nine years in state prison after being convicted of delivering the drugs that caused a 2023 drug overdose death.

Ducat, 37, was charged with first-degree reckless homicide by delivering drugs after Manitowoc police investigated a July 2023 drug overdose death.

Manitowoc police were called to the 900 block of South 23rd Street on July 20, 2023, for the report of an unconscious 42-year-old man. Despite life-saving attempts, including multiple doses of Narcan, the man was later pronounced dead.

Officers found fentanyl in the apartment and an autopsy confirmed the victim died from fentanyl and methamphetamine toxicity, according to the criminal complaint.

In addition to the homicide charge, Ducat was also charged with felony manufacture/deliver Schedule I, II narcotics and felony manufacture/deliver amphetamine. Those charges were dismissed.

Ducat was sentenced to nine years in state prison, followed by six years of extended supervision. He was also ordered to pay restitution to the victim’s family.

In November 2024, Ducat rejected a plea offer from the District Attorney’s Office, instead taking the matter to trial.

The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre and was presided over by Manitowoc County Circuit Court Judge Anthony Lambrecht. Ducat was represented by attorney Russell J.A. Jones.
