How Wisconsinites can donate to support flood victims in Texas

Officials and relief organizations are working around the clock in central Texas, as massive floods over the July 4 weekend killed dozens of people and displaced hundreds more.

As of July 7, authorities have rescued more than 800 people, USA TODAY reported. But many are still missing, including at least 10 girls from a nearby summer camp that endured the worst of the flooding.

Where was the flooding in Texas?

Flood swept across Texas Hill Country in the early morning hours of July 4, as heavy rain causes the Guadalupe River to swell more than 26 feet in under an hour. Thunderstorms have persisted since, causing more flooding.

As of July 7, people have died as a result of the floods across at least six central Texas counties — Kerr, Travis, Burnet, Kendall, Williamson and Tom Green — with the majority of deaths reported in the city of Kerville.

How many people have died in the Texas floods?

At least 90 people have died in the Texas floods, including 75 deaths in Kerr County, according to the latest reports from state and local officials July 7.

Among the hardest-hit locations was Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp in Kerr County. At least 27 children and counselors from the camp have died in the flood, USA TODAY reported July 7.

The American Red Cross is also on the ground aiding with relief efforts. However, in a July 6 news release, the organization said it had adequate resources for the time being to respond to the disaster and isn’t accepting donations specifically for flood relief.
