Here's how much rain Green Bay got June 24

Green Bay faced torrential rain and hail June 24 that caused flash flooding and a roof collapse in the city.

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department responded to 42 calls in three hours from 6 to 9 p.m., with most of them related to the storm. Emergency responders responded to numerous stalled vehicles in flooded roads, downed power lines, and arcing electrical wires.

In downtown Green Bay, the quick hit of rainfall caused the roof to collapse at Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary.

“This was a pretty rare event,” said Roy Eckberg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Green Bay. “We do from time to time get flash flooding but it was a little unexpected based on the storm pattern.”

How much rain did Green Bay get?

The National Weather Service Green Bay office in Ashwaubenon measured 1.25 inches of rain June 24. The highest amount of precipitation ever on June 24 was recorded at 1.52 inches in 1940, weather service data shows.

With June 24’s rain, Green Bay has had a total 22.28 inches of rain this year, hitting the precipitation record for the year so far.

Northwestern parts of Green Bay got more rainfall between 2 to 3.5 inches between 5-7 p.m., Eckberg said. At some moments during the late hours, over a half-inch of rain fell in an hour twice yesterday at about 4 p.m. and about 7 p.m.

Following a dryer month in May, this week’s rain put the total for June at 4.87 inches so far which is 1.55 inches above normal, according to the weather service.

Is more rain on the way?

Some light rain could be in the forecast for Green Bay today, up to a quarter inch of rain, Eckberg said.

The next chance for more rain is in the evening June 28, but Eckberg said it’s too early to say how much is expected.
