Gas prices to be near all-time high on July 4. What Wisconsinites should know

Your 4th of July road trip is projected to be one of the most expensive ever.

GasBuddy projects that the average price of gasoline on July 4 will be $3.75 a gallon nationally, the second highest price ever recorded on Independence Day. The all-time high was $4.80 on July 4, 2022.

Prices are at $1 higher than in early 2026 and 65 cents higher than last year.

However, the price of gas is falling. There have been six straight weeks of national average declines after prices skyrocketed when the Strait of Hormuz closed.

“Six weeks of declines sounds like good news, and in some ways it is, but the context matters,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in a news release. “The U.S.-Iran agreement gives markets hope, but it’s being tested, and any breakdown in those talks could reverse the recent relief quickly. Drivers should use every tool available to find the lowest prices near them before filling up.”

What have past Fourth of July gas prices looked like?

How do I find the cheapest gas in Milwaukee?

The website GasBuddy tracks the cost of a gallon of gas across the city. Users report gas prices to the site, which then updates in real time to show the lowest cost of fuel in the area.

The Star gas station at 5656 N. 76th Street was the cheapest in the city on June 25 at $3.39 for regular unleaded gas, according to the site. The Meijer in Oak Creek on Howell Avenue was one cent cheaper, making it the cheapest in the metro area.

AAA says Wisconsin gas prices were $3.03 on average a year ago. Prices are now $3.69 on average.
