RICHMOND, IN — Investigators have determined a death Wednesday night in the emergency department at Reid Hospital was the result of foul play.
According to a news release from Wayne County Coroner Brent Meadows, the “incident leading to the death” might have taken place in the area of the Petro Travel Center in New Paris, Ohio, just across the Indiana-Ohio state line.
The victim’s remains were taken to the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio, for a “forensic autopsy and confirmatory identification,” the news release said.
“This is a deeply tragic case, and our thoughts are with the loved ones of the decedent during this difficult time,” Meadows said. “Our office is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation alongside our law enforcement partners. We ask for patience and respect as we work to confirm identification and notify family.”
Also involved in the investigation are the sheriff’s departments in both Wayne County and Preble County, Ohio.
The coroner said the victim’s name will be released once formal identification is made and relatives are notified.
WHIO-TV in Dayton said the body of a woman — later declared dead at Reid Hospital — was found in a semi at the New Paris truck stop.
The driver of the semi indicated he was responsible for her death, Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson told reporters.
