The San Francisco 49ers made a huge change an underrated position last year when they cut kicker Jake Moody and signed Eddy Pineiro, who went on to have a great season and earned a multi-year extension in the offseason.
After a stint with the Chicago Bears last year, Moody joined the Washington Commanders and was competing to be their kicker for the 2026 season this training camp. However, The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala reported on Monday that Moody has lost the battle to rookie Drew Stevens, and the team is releasing him.
San Francisco took Moody in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft after he earned All-American honors twice and won the Lou Groza award during his time at Michigan. He has a solid first year, making 21-of-25 field goals.
In 2024, Moody’s performance slipped. He made just 24-of-34 field goals, and then we he started the 2025 season 1-for-3, San Francisco cut bait.
Since then, Moody went 8-for-9 with the Bears in two games last year and 10-for-11 in six games with the Commanders. Now, after losing his job to Stevens, he’ll be looking for another opportunity for 2026.
