Aaron Donald had a second official workout with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, taking the field at the team’s facility in Woodland Hills once again. He still hasn’t announced whether he’s going to come out of retirement or not, but things have been trending toward a return in the last couple of weeks.
It’s a good sign that he worked out for the Rams again this weekend, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says that doesn’t mean anything is official yet. On “Good Morning Football” Monday, Rapoport shared the latest on Donald following his second workout.
“What happened, again, is Aaron Donald put on some helmets, put on some pads, and worked out for the Rams,” he said. “Wanted to see how his body acclimated. And the answer to your question about is it time: not yet. He’s really just going through the process. The Rams have been very vocal about saying they do not have a timeframe for Aaron Donald.”
Rapoport once again said that the Rams aren’t necessarily waiting on Donald to make a decision before proceeding with their roster plans. He would be a bonus if he comes back, fitting in on what’s already a strong defensive line.
“It’s not like there needs to be some move where they would say, ‘All right, well, if we get him, we then need to trade or cut this guy, or we need to make room for this guy, or we need to figure out this salary. So, it has to be now.’ It really doesn’t have to be anytime,” he said. “It has to be whenever Aaron Donald wants. No doubt the team will welcome him with open arms, if he decides to play. It is fair to say it is trending that way, that he would likely play, but there’s been no firm decision.”
Sean McVay said after the Rams’ win over the Chiefs on Saturday that he won’t put “invisible deadlines” on this situation, and that it’s completely on Donald’s time. He hopes to know “sooner than later” whether Donald plans to return, but the team isn’t rushing him into anything.
