Medical staff reported multiple rib fractures, a clavicle fracture and a throat injury that required surgery, police said in a news release April 29.

The infant was first evaluated at a Fond du Lac hospital before being transferred to Milwaukee for a higher level of care, police said.

Child Protective Services joins ongoing investigation

Detectives were activated immediately after the report, according to the Fond du Lac Police Department.

Fond du Lac County Department of Human Services Child Protective Services also responded, launching a joint investigation.

Investigators reviewed medical records from multiple providers and interviewed medical professionals, police said.

Detectives also conducted numerous interviews as the case developed.

Authorities later learned the infant had additional injuries beyond those first reported.

25-year-old taken into custody on felony child abuse charge

Police said detectives interviewed a 25-year-old man connected to the infant on April 28. After the interview, the man was arrested and booked into Fond du Lac County Jail on a charge of physical abuse of a child — reckless causation of bodily harm, a Class H felony.

The case has been referred to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office for review.

“Our detectives, officers and partner agencies have worked tirelessly on this case from the moment we were notified,” Fond du Lac Police Lt. Nick Hahn said in a statement. “Our focus remains where it belongs: on the safety and well-being of this child.”

What’s next: Court appearance pending

Police said the investigation remains ongoing. No additional details are expected before the man’s initial appearance in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court. The man’s name was also not immediately released.
