If the Orlando Magic are to stun the basketball world by finishing the first-round upset of the No. 1-seeded Detroit Pistons, they might have to do it without one of their best players.
The Magic enter Game 5 tonight needing just one win to become the sixth 8 seed in league history to advance in the NBA Playoffs. Desmond Bain led the charge with 22 points in their 94-88 victory in Game 4, while Paolo Banchero added 18 and Wendell Carter Jr. tallied a double-double. Two of Jamal Cain’s eight points came on a nasty dunk over Jalen Duren that set the mood in the win.
However, Franz Wagner, who contributed 19 points and was the team’s second-leading scorer throughout the season, left the game early with a calf injury that leaves his availability in the air. The Michigan alum missed more than half of the regular season because of a severe ankle sprain. Being without Wagner could mean an easier time for Pistons star Cade Cunningham, who has led the series in scoring with 29.5 points per game but who also has been forced into 27 turnovers through the first four games.

If Orlando can pull out another win, they would move on to the conference semifinals for the first time since Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson fell to Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce’s Boston Celtics in the 2010 Eastern Conference Finals. The Magic would face either the Cleveland Cavaliers or Toronto Raptors in the second round, with the Celtics favorites to be waiting again in the conference finals.
