MANITOWOC – A 35-year-old Manitowoc man is accused of punching a Manitowoc County corrections officer during booking April 30 at the Manitowoc County Jail, sending the officer to a hospital, according to a report.
Investigators said the officer stepped out from behind the booking counter as the man was escorted back to his cell after making a phone call.
The man is suspected to have punched the officer in the face. Other corrections staff restrained him, the report says.
The officer was treated at Aurora Medical Center in Manitowoc. Authorities said they photographed the injury and obtained jail surveillance video.
Earlier Manitowoc arrest: Probation warrant encounter on Expo Drive
Authorities said the jail incident happened hours after officers arrested the man on the city’s southwest side on an active probation warrant.
Police said probation agents spotted him near Walmart, and officers found him walking in the 4000 block of Expo Drive.
When an officer told him he was under arrest, police said the man pulled away and moved as if trying to grab the officer near the head and shoulders.
The officer pushed him back, drew a stun gun and ordered him to the ground, police said. The man complied until another officer arrived and handcuffed him. He was taken to the Manitowoc County Jail without further incident, police said.
Aggravated battery, resisting arrest charges referred
Authorities said the jail assault was referred to prosecutors for aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.
A resisting arrest charge was also referred in connection with the earlier warrant arrest, authorities said. The man remained in custody at the Manitowoc County Jail, according to the report.
