Pet World, a regional retailer for decades, will close its East Moreland Boulevard store in Waukesha, a decision that follows the recent sale of its building.
Located on a limited-access street off Kossow Road — along the same stretch where the Marcus Westown Theatre and Gander Mountain (now Urban Air Adventure Park) once operated — Pet World is the only remaining retailer adjacent Waukesha’s oldest Target store. The reason for the store’s closing isn’t clear.
However, according to state real estate records, the building in which Pet World operates, 2410 E. Moreland Blvd., was recently sold to a new Tennessee-based company, FUNWAUK RE LLC. The limited liability company was created on Aug. 25, and no information was available through online business records.
The listed seller was DPMD LLC, based in Menomonee Falls. Diane Steckmann, who was identified as the registered agent for DPMD in state financial institution records, is the owner of Pet World, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Pet World placed “store closing” signs on the exterior walls of its store shortly after the sale closed on Oct. 8. A person answering the phone at the store on Oct. 23 said no specific closing date has been set. She said no one was available to answer questions about the store’s status.
Pet World, which recently closed its Madison location, was founded in 1978, according to its website. It also has locations in Greenfield, Menomonee Falls and West Allis. The stores, which are also called warehouse outlets, sell supplies and pets.
